Most families with children choose a pediatrician for their overall health care needs through their developing years. Pediatric dentists fill this same crucial role in oral health medicine.  Here are some answers to common questions that you may have:

What Does a Pediatric Dentist Do?

All dentists receive similar training and must earn an undergraduate degree and attend four years of dental school where they receive either a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD). Pediatric dentists are professionals who after four years of dental school, have completed a two to three year residency to receive more specialized training just like medical professionals do.  This specialized dental program caters to children and those who have special needs or otherwise need gentler care.  Included is hospital training, where they treat children with more severe dental needs and emergencies, training in orthodontic teeth-straightening methods, and training in moderate sedation.

How Old Are Pediatric Dentists’ Patients?

Pediatric dentists generally treat children from birth to college. If a child has developmental issues or needs to be seen in a hospital setting due to another medical condition, a pediatric dentist is uniquely qualified to provide that specialized treatment. Children with special needs that continue into adulthood are still seen past the age of 18.

Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist Instead of a General Dentist?

Simply put, the difference between a general dentist who treats children and a pediatric dentist is the additional education and specialized training a pediatric dentist has received to provide the best clinical care and positive experience possible.  Pediatric dentists are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage conditions specific to children.  In addition, the extra two to three years of training includes child behavioral strategies and psychology, this translates to helping children feel more comfortable with their dental experiences.  Thus setting the stage for a positive image of dental treatment into adulthood.  In residency pediatric dentists also learn behavioral and clinical treatments for children with special needs and other unique medical conditions.  Part of their intensive training process involves working in hospitals and treating children with extreme medical conditions so no case is too challenging for a pediatric dentist.

Because pediatric dentists focus on treating only children, their offices are designed to be child-centered.  From the fun designs and activities available in the waiting room to the smaller instruments, treatment room distractions, and reward prizes, our focus is on helping children feel comfortable and enjoy their dental experience.  We want them to be excited about coming to their next visit!

In our office we think children are the best patients! Dr. Johnson and each of his staff members want to make your child feel safe and comfortable while diagnosing, treating, and educating them so they can have a healthy smile for life! Contact us today to get started!
